For Family Partnership Workers / Aboriginal Community Workers

The Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program has been uniquely adapted for delivery to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It includes the essential role of an Aboriginal Family Partnership Worker (FPW) in all Home Visiting Teams. The FPW works in partnership with a Nurse Home Visitor (NHV), the mum and families.

The Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander FPWs bring their own cultural knowledge and connections and are vital in building rapport and promoting trust and respect between the ANFPP team and mums (and their families), local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations, and the broader community and health providers.

FPWs assist in sharing cultural understanding and developing awareness within their teams to ensure a culturally safe and sensitive delivery of the program. The home visiting team works together at each home visit to build on the strengths of the mother and support the family through pregnancy, infancy and toddlerhood.

Education is provided to the home visiting team, including both the FPW and NHV, to implement the program effectively.  Family Partnership Workers are also supported by their Nurse Supervisor and a national network of FPWs who connect regularly to share ideas and continue to improve their practice.
